“We travel on the road to adventure
On a desert highway straight to the heart of the sun
Like lovers and hereos, and the restless part of everyone
We’re only at home when we’re on the run
On the run…”
(From the song, “Dreamline”, from the band Rush)
To Begin
In this post, we’ll examine what we believe are some of the top reasons for choosing consciously to become and remain nomadic as a permanent lifestyle preference. Though not supported in modern society, especially for the young, we believe there are practical, priceless benefits, to the pursuit of being a modern nomad, despite the initial struggle against the herd.
A Nomad Cannot Be Coerced
It is indeed a challenge to eliminate coercion in one’s Life, but it is something that MUST be dealt with to be a successfully, happily fulfilled nomad, long-term. Each and every day, is divinely YOURS, and your daily experiences, should be YOUR decisions, not “I have too’s”, “I should’s”, “I gotta’s”.
You will have to eliminate the financial pressures of modern American culture to gain a higher perspective, as the American Dream, is a demanding beast that must be fed at all costs. Eating, breathing, sleeping, dying, merely existing, all cost you. Money won’t go away till we COLLECTIVELY decide it must, and come up with something better and less manipulative. Those of U.S., who already see it this way, must work to influence the rest, until we arrive at a point where we let each other simply be A/Live without coercion.
As you personally eliminate having to work a regular job, having to Live in the same location traveling the tight “Loop (job to house and back again)”, will “civilization” change for the better, instead emphasizing the FREE movement around the landscape, the emphasis on limitless experience for ALL, putting our tools and inventions towards the collective FREEing of each other. It will take some effort, to break the collective inertia around U.S., but it is infinitely worth it.
Elimination of Routine
Right now the vast majority of people lead a highly routine lifestyle. Most of the days of the week are scripted and predictable. A nomadic lifestyle inevitably breaks apart routine, and fosters growth by exercising the part within all of us that flourishes on change and exploration. One can choose where to be or what to experience during any given day bringing great joy to those who live this way.
We do not want to wait until retirement to truly Live, banged up and bruised from years of imposed self abuse, joyful Living should be a fulltime job all of our Live’s. Our time is relatively short on this planet; we do not want to waste it in repetitious, often meaningless experience. Routine is the enemy of true happiness, it robs Life of it’s joy. Adopting nomadic lifestyle is the remedy to the illness of routine.
The Joy of Infinite Experience
On the same token, nomadic Life positively awakens inside, the part of us that is yearning for new and varied experience. To one who is fully a/Live, there are an infinite amount of things to see and experience on this planet, especially as one venture’s DEEP into wild nature. Our observations, are that humans who sit and settle, get territorial, ego-centric (I-focused), and eventually go numb from routine, no matter how beautiful or powerful the surroundings.
A nomadic lifestyle will keep that part of us a/Live. Even a small move often, generates a new perspective on Life, like seeing a different angle of the sunset, can generate new meaning and personal insight. You were built with powerful abilities to adapt to surrounding, ever-changing conditions. You have internal needs to see grand vista’s, the rising and setting of the Sun each day and other cosmic significant events.
Choosing permanent nomadicism, fosters the revitalization of the often dormant element of Joy, that remains elusive in the burnt offerings of modern culture, that cannot come from buying one more thing, drinking one more drink, or other ineffective attempts at resurrecting it.
The Tao of Movement
Movement keeps us a/Live to the blessed moments. It is Tao, the Path. Many sages in different sects have wandered and/or migrated. There is a freedom and growth in detachment, from not clinging to the predictable. There is excitement to be had to see what is over the next mountaintop, what’s around the next bend, what’s up the river…It keeps us in touch with the BIG picture.
Everything in the universe is in CONSTANT motion and movement, indeed stillness, is a sign of Death. We embrace motion daily by hiking, walking, biking, rock-climbing, kayaking and other forms of divine movement, taking in the ever-varying sights, sounds, and smells of the constantly changing tapestry of ALL that Life has to offer. Partaking in a lifestyle that embraces this daily, fosters an Awake-ness that cannot be had any other way.
Sharing The Bounty
Most important of ALL, becoming nomadic, allows us to share all the Earth, including the water and air, with all of the people. If one “buys” a piece of a great lake such as Lake Tahoe, or a part of ocean shoreline, or any piece of land for that matter, one then cuts off that part from others being able to experience it. Inevitably, fences go up, “No Trespassing” signs are put in, and slowly but surely, access to beautiful areas of the Earth, are slowly taken away. The landscape is chopped up and subdivided, and further altered to the whims of the “owners”.
Contrast this to nomadic philosophy of non-ownership. One experiences the landscape but does not “own” it. One improves it, by planting food-producing plants and trees, practices proper stewardship of wild animal habitat, creates camping areas, (a symbol of a common, shared space), and so on. Nomadic Life is a lifestyle of sharing. We have the tools, means, and abilities as a group, to setup this planet any way we choose, especially in ways to where we all benefit, by granting each other limitless access to the true gifts of Life, (Sun and its creations Air, Water, Earth), whose daily experience, make Life truly worth Living.
What is more attractive than a global nomadic society sharing the entire Earth?
