The Law of Attraction Reaches The Masses
The popularity of the movie “The Secret”, by Rhonda Byrne, inspired by the phenomenon of the “entities” Abraham channeled supposedly by Ester Hicks, has grown and spread throughout modern culture. It is based on the premise that there is a universal law that one can attract whatever one focus’ on in Life; i.e. we create our own reality. By attraction, like magnetics, that which is like unto itself is drawn. The well received by mainstream culture The Secret
, both movie and book, summarizes it down to three principles namely:
- Ask
- Believe
- Receive
Almost everywhere I go, I overhear conversations and quotes from people discussing the ideology popularized by the ideas, such as, “I am working on manifesting…” (fill in the blank). Oprah has endorsed it, and featured it prominently on her show. Larry King has done a feature on it. Indeed, there is something universally enticing about the idea, to where it has swept the planet.

I bought into this theory hook, line and sinker. I have been a master at imagining the Life I want to Live, writing it down in detail, living it in my imagination, feeling and believing it would come, opening myself to receiving what I wanted, and then doing absolutely nothing concrete in the physical world to make it happen. Guess what? Nothing happens, time slips by, Life is wasted, but you should see the Life I’ve been virtually living. Either The Secret is incomplete, or I possess major resistance towards materializing the things and Life I long to Live. Not only that, but the Life I dream of manifesting is directly opposed by most around me.
The Main Benefit of “The Secret”
This is not to say we should throw out the whole Law of Attraction theory. It is definitely useful in context. The main benefit is that it Allows one to dream about their ideal Life without restriction. This is a valuable exercise, as it removes cultural bias, personal limitations, past conditioning, and the like.

Most of us grow up with a lot of “you have to do this or that”, or “you should do this” baggage. To let go of that burden periodically is extremely important in living an authentic Life without restriction or manipulation. One needs to sort out if they are living their own Life as they would really want to, or they are actually Living a Life to please others. If the Law of Attraction provides a placebo effect, and causes you to reach, and/or take chances you wouldn’t normally, that’s a good thing overall.
The other main beneficial message that Abraham through Ester Hicks broadcasts is that Life is about feeling good. We aren’t here to struggle, suffer, and walk around in pain, till death do us part. You’ve got to have some self-worth going on to say no to the chains of bondage that society at large, in its collective, unconscious ignorance, will try and cast around your precious little Life. Make no mistake though, the conditions of civilization aren’t exactly benign, and some massive action will be required to change it to a benevolent system.
The Flaws As We See Them

The main flaw in the Law of Attraction lies in the fact that we do dwell on a finite planet. If everyone manifested the idea that Bill Gates has, that we should all live in 45,000 square foot homes, as he and his family do, we’re in big trouble. How about Tony Robbins castle and private helicopter? All ideas need to multiplied by the world’s population to test their sustainability. In light of that, a 45,000 square foot home becomes a dangerous idea, especially if it begins to spread and “manifest” around the world. This is one of the reasons we have problems with land ownership in general.
One “transmission” I listened to had Ester talking about exercise, that one could simply visualize a workout, and the body will respond like it had actually moved. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather climb the mountain, than visualize climbing the mountain. I’m willing to bet, that the benefits to actually doing the act, are far, far greater. This type of detachment from physicality is unhealthy in its implications.

In essence the Law of Attraction creates another loophole for people to be disconnected from the Earth, living phenomenon, their own bodies, and most importantly from their fellow human beings. In essence, it is a form of escapism, and fosters irresponsible decisions. We DO need to consider each other in our manifesting and creating. If Oprah creates an empire to secure her own freedom, whereby untold people are working “jobs” for her, those people are enslaved under her idea that she is the “boss”. Somebody has to clean the bathrooms at the studios, and I’m sure its NOT her. We are all equal, and all deserve freedom as much as anyone else. The civilization that we build through collective manifestation, needs to reflect that principle, and right now, does not in the least.

As decisions made pile up through the mob, they begin to take on weight that the rest cannot ignore. Indeed, the mob can impact the minority regardless of right or wrong, as the majority create conditions around the rest, based on what they feel is right course of action. Often these “decisions” are influenced through coercive brainwashing or collective ignorance as to consequence. The American Indians had no choice but to submit to the mob, whose decisions and viewpoints were imposed by force. Land ownership made no sense to them but it was be conform or die. If the mob thinks that working jobs is the only reality, one will have no choice but to join in or suffer the consequences of homelessness or worse.
The Law Of Attraction Requires Action
The Law of Attraction is a nice idea, though action is a necessary ingredient in any success formula. It is what gives Life its momentum and its juice. We live in a physical universe immersed in matter which at its base and source is simply Light. To be detached in any way from this physicality is a sign of madness. Not considering action in the equation of getting things done on Earth is a recipe for distraction or even failure.

Realize that Ester and Jerry Hicks are “doing” things like selling products like DVD’s, CD’s, books and the like, as well as giving presentations regularly. They are not sitting around manifesting their money and wealth by thought alone, which seems quite extensive, without having some kind of physical products to sell; rather their catalogue of product is quite broad. Take a clue from that.
We say hedge your bets and play it safe. Use the Law of Attraction wisely where it’s useful, to gain clarity towards what you really want in life, (freedom), but don’t make the mistake of living in your head and waiting and hoping, as you may be disappointed. Keep your head in the clouds dreaming, but sink your feet deep in the Earth by doing. Most importantly, we need to consider each other in our manifestations. In the quiet of your mind, ask for what you want, believe in it, get ready to receive it, but then evaluate it, by multiplying your desire times 7+ billion and counting…

I enjoyed reading your post and found it to be well balanced and responsible in it’s message. You clearly have a talent for presenting logical thoughts and relevant concepts.
I see one of the problems and issues with the “Law” of attraction (LOA) in being that the word “Law” which has connotations of rule and exact science is not relevant or appropriate in the common expressions regarding a “Law of Attraction”. Clearly, what’s being presented is a “principle” of the phenomenon of attracting energies and entities.
If LOA truly is a “Law” then we should have a set of rules that apply and work to completeness every single time they are applied, -just as we have a law of gravity that was proven and substantiated by Newton’s discovery and documentation of.
I read on Yaro’s blog that someone has actually written a book examining the working principles behind the LOA (as expounded in “The Secret”),.. I will be interested to see how thorough and scientific the author’s work is or whether it’s just more smoke and mirrors bumf that “The Secret” was shrouded in.
Thanks for the comment Russ, as you are my first “real” comment.
I too would like to see some kind of study, as to whether it could be proven that the “Law” works. I’ve searched the internet, and most in the physics world cry hoax, so…
Thank you – I found your blog through Yaro, too … finally, some balance out of the bullshit …
What concerns me about The Secret is the claims it makes to science – Karen Kelly’s book, The Secret Behind The Secret, tells of the disgruntled scientists and physicists whose words were misquoted and selectively edited in the the movie. The book offers many other interesting insights into this so called “secret”. (No, I don’t now the author – I just think she’s done a great job of showing the other side of the coin).
There are always two (or 10) sides to every story or belief – it’s good to investigate at least more than one.
You’re right when you talk about the need to take action – despite what these authors would have us believe, you do have to get off your butt to make things happen, and I have often read that the Universe rewards action. Rhonda Byrne was supposedly sitting in her Sydney apartment when the idea came to her. She subsequently packed her bag and flew to the US to talk to those who became involved in the project. I’ll bet my last buck, the project would never have happened if she just sat there in Sydney imagining it.
Thanks for the comment Sam. I’ll check out the book you mentioned. Thats interesting about the scientists and physicists. I come from a pretty magical thinking new agey community, where if they read my post, I would get crucified.
Now if I could just get myself to take consistent action. I too believe the universe rewards action. I’ve been the king of procrastination most of my adult life…sigh.
