Katadyn Ceramic Microfilter

Water of Life

picture of katadyn filterAs every good Nature focused nomad knows, good Water, is one the most important substances to Live a quality Life.  In some areas when one is Micro-Traveling ™, having a plentiful supply of available drinking water, can mean the difference between Life and Death.  Of course we are into being as fully a/Live as possible, so we walk the mountains, the deserts and other wild places, prepared.

Much importance is placed upon the quality of one’s diet, but we should be conscious of the fact, that we are some 75-90% water.  That’s pretty important in the grand scheme of things.  There is nothing more energizing and Life-consciousness expanding, than drinking rare water from high mountain streams, waterfalls and springs.   THAT water, that only exists THERE, is like no other.

As Micronomads ™, we Live for such waters, as they propel one closer to Nature, and lift us higher than can be had by drinking bottled, piped, and/or massively filtered fare.

Filtering Out The Crap

From the Katadyn website:

The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes 80 percent of all travel diseases to contaminated drinking water. Drinking water contains three groups of pathogenic microorganisms: viruses, such as hepatitis A, Norwalk virus, or poliovirus; bacteria, like e-coli, salmonella, and cholera; and protozoans, such as giardia and cryptosporidium. Tap water and ice cubes are usually the culprits when traveling, but even bottled water can be questionable. The backcountry is also a source of waterborne illness. A pristine stream may be safe one day and contaminated the next, as microorganisms stemming from human and animal waste are typically spread by rain and runoff. As a result, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends treating water from every source in the backcountry.

Domesticated pets also are now posing a threat as more pet owners take their animals out into the wild where they poop all over the surrounding terrain, often alongside river banks and streams.  This gets washed down by rainfall, contaminating the waters.  It’s simply not safe to drink.

Katadyn’s Unique Strengths

There are a number of cheapo filters on the market.  There are vast differences in safety, construction, and filtering capability.  This model can last a long time, far longer than the cheap, disposable filters on the market.  This is no ordinary plastic piece of junk.  Katadyn Ceramic Microfilter is chosen by the U.S. military and expeditions due to its superior durability and dependability.   If you add the charcoal filter to it, you can practically drink ANY water.

The construction is a plastic housing with the ceramic filter element inside.  The bottom has cushioned feet for stability on any surface.  The pump and spout are steel.  The unit feels solid and durable.

The Specs:

  • Designed for outdoor enthusiasts and international travelers.
  • Silver impregnated ceramic element effective against bacteria and protozoa.
  • Filters all microorganisms larger than 0.2 microns.
  • Round steel pump handle for easy pumping.
  • Output: 1 quart per minute
  • Usage: 1-4 people.
  • Capacity: 13,000 gallons.
  • Dimensions: 2.4 x 10 inches.
  • Technology: 0.2 micron ceramic depth filter, (cleanable).
  • Weight: 20 ounces.

Operation

The operation is simple.  One dangles the rubber tube on the end with the debris screen ito the water source.  It is good to keep the screen off the bottoms of water sources, to keep it from getting clogged with plant material or sand and dirt.  A bit of pre-pumping is necessary to “clear” the filter, then you simply pump the amount of water you need, directly into your containers.

Afterwords, a simple dis-assembly, then a quick cleaning of the filter element with the supplied brush is all that’s needed.  Comes with a carrying pouch to store it all.

Cons:

If any con could be found, it would be the weight.  For ultra-light backpackers, this model would tip their pound diet conscious scale.  For us, weight isn’t the primary concern, safety and reliability is tops.

Summing It Up

We are mostly made of water.  Every nomad wants to drink good, safe water.  Every nomad wants to drink water from mountain tops, high mountain streams, hidden springs and other potent, rare waters.  Every nomad wants to drink safely.  An absolutely essential piece of gear.
